POST MORTEM!
Another stunning success, probably the best ever, as
each reunion
has been built on the experiences of its predecessor.
Wim Nijveld speaks for all of us when he writes
to the organising committee
“Thank
you for a fantastically well organised reunion, and for the great
atmosphere
created by y'all!!!.”

PHOTO ALBUM
An electronic photo album of the event has now been
created, with plenty of room for further additions.

To have a look, just click on
this thumbnail
of our valiant organisers.
If you want your own digital pix included, kindly
send them to tony@tallrite.com,
but FIRST, please
 |
crop
them and adjust lighting and contrast as required**,
|
 |
reduce
the file size to about 100 kb**,
|
 |
include
only photos of the actual event. |
 |
But if
you have a large number of pix,
please snail-mail them on a CD to
Tony Allwright, 9 Killiney Heath, Killiney, Co Dublin,
Ireland. |
 |
If your
photos are non-digital hard-copy, please snail-mail them to the same
address for scanning. |
**My wife tells me that asking
people to touch up their own photos might put them off.
So let me reveal to you the secret software tool for doctoring photos:
GRANDCHILDREN, preferably teenagers. That's their what
they're there for.
Alternatively, if you're feeling nerdy and want to
learn how to manipulate your photos yourself,
you can download excellent software called Serif PhotoPlus 6
completely free of charge by going to
http://www.freeserifsoftware.com and downloading Photo Plus, where
it says
“Cool Photos”.
The size is 20 Mb. When you fire it up, you then are invited to
register in order to activate it.
You can teach yourself to use Photo Plus using the
Help facility, but the only commands you really need to know, are
 |
File/Open (to get the photo you want to manipulate) |
 |
Image/Adjust/BrightnessContrast
|
 |
Image/Flip-Rotate
|
 |
Image/Size (smaller size = smaller file. Change the longer
dimension to 7 inches) |
 |
Image/Other/FixRedEye (important and easy)
|
 |
the
Crop icon on the left-hand toolbar (snip off unwanted bits of the
photo, the more you snip the smaller the file size)
|
 |
File/Export (ie save as jpg, gif or whatever you want)
 |
This last command is what finally reduces the file size.
|
 |
When executing it, you can also affect the file size by
“optimising” it to a lower level of
detail that still looks ok. |
|
There are numerous other commands, though you'll
rarely need them.

NOTE FROM YOUR ORGANISING COMMITTEE
7th May 2008
Just a word of warning. On 7th May it was advised that the
luggage handlers in Schiphol airport (Amsterdam) may go on
strike on Friday 9th May. Apparently it is just one
company that handles circa 50%, but for various aircraft
operators. So, your committee's advice is that you seek advice
from your travel company. But, also even if it does not concern
you directly, the airport may be in disarray anyhow and you may
have delays.
We Dutch never strike or rarely really, so this is our bad
fortune - and now yours too!.
See you all on Saturday.

To stimulate your
adult children into action, read on ... |
... Don't forget your children - now adults of course. They are
Warri Veterans too!
Some time ago we
mentioned that it would be a good idea to investigate whether
some of our children who lived with us in Warri, went to school
and had friends would show interest in joining the reunion. At
the first reunion in 2003 there were several, mainly British.
Now we have at least four persons that have expressed interest
and have already joined. They are
 |
Sybert (son of Bert and Janneke Ockeloen),
|
 |
Dorine and Farrand (son and daughter of
Heike Bloch) and |
 |
Sylvia (daughter of Joke and Hans Post).
|
Further there are some
that are hesitant as they first want to know who else will join.
Some names:
 |
Bart (son of Frank and Martha van Hest)
and |
 |
Peter de Waard (son of Virginie van
Ditzhuizen). |
From overseas we will
also have the pleasure to have
 |
Brian Cordill (son of Naomi and Joe) and
his wife Leigh |
 |
Alison (daughter of Sue Sanger)
|
 |
Anita (daughter of Sandi Flynn). |
When we brainstormed,
there were some names that came to mind. Obviously we will not
exclude anyone from overseas, but we realise that it is rather
late to make travelling plans. So here we present some Dutch
family names of whom we know they had children in Warri.
We listed :
| |
|
 |
Meijer |
 |
Korber |
 |
Vos Kerkhoff |
|
 |

A NOTE FROM YOUR ORGANISING COMMITTEE
11th May 2007
As of mid-May, 76 people have
expressed an interest and 59 have said they really
mean it by actually parting with hard cash! The others are
urged to pay the necessary deposits without further delay.
The British contingent is still a bit thin on the
ground. Let's get a few more Brits signed up or orange flags
will overwhelm the union jacks!
It's cheap and easy to get to The Hague these days,
whether by ferry, Ryanair, Easyjet or even the Chunnel.
We will shortly be signing contracts with the
hotel
so will need to start finalising numbers before long.
Don't get left behind!! Back

WHAT'S
HAPPENED
The first reunion took place in 2003 for people who were
in Warri, primarily between the years 1968 and 1975, known
as the 1970s Warri Veterans, or
WVs. Click on the banner below to get the full story

120 WVs showed up
for a noisy evening on Saturday 4th October 2003 at
the Anchor Pub, Bankside, 34 Park Street, London SE1 9EF
(near Southwark Bridge), and ended up demanding a re-run
in 2005.
The
second Warri Reunion took place on Saturday 1st October 2005 at “Ye Harte & Garter Hotel” just
beside Windsor Castle, outside London. Over 80 of us met upstairs in the Henry Bar,
where we were given a glass of sparkling wine on arrival - after that drinks
were purchased from the Bar. A delicious buffet meal was served in the adjoining Ballroom at 8.30 pm and the bar
remained open until after 1.00 am. For more details, click
here.
We're now looking forward to the third reunion, this time
in the Netherlands.

DETAILS FOR THE 2008 EVENT
Details of the event, and what to do to become a part of it are as
follows. If you prefer, you can download the same information as a
Word document by clicking
here.
Invitation to participate
In April and August of 2006 we distributed some information about our
plans for the next Warri Re-union, the third one in succession after the one
in London (2003) and Windsor (2005). This time it will be held in The
Hague in the Netherlands
Whereas
previously we were providing early advice about the date of the event to put in your diary, whilst trhying
to get at least an idea about how many guests to expect, we now need to firm
up the plans. We therefore ask you to commit yourselves and
forward the payment of your participation fee within the terms indicated
in the documents linked below.
Please realise that the organizers will have to sign a contract with the
hotel for the event, ie for the rent of venue, the welcome drinks, the
buffet dinner and the music. This contract must be in place at the latest
one year prior to the event, hence by the end of April 2007. Consequently
your payments should be with us not later than 15th April 2007.
NB:
Reservations of rooms in the hotel will be your own affair, however
relevant information is provided below to assist.
Date of the event
The Warri Veterans Re-union 2008 will take place on
Saturday 10th May 2008. We will meet for drinks from 17.00 till
19.00 hours in a secluded bar of the hotel. Thereafter we will proceed to an
adjacent ballroom for a buffet dinner and a (hopefully!) pleasant
get-together with music, dancing and a photo for Memory Lane. The music will
be chosen such that dancing as well as conversation will be possible
concurrently. The ballroom has been
carefully selected so that in case we will have more participants than
currently expected the space can be increased without compromising the
cosiness of the room. This
get-together may last till 01.00 or 02.00 o’clock in the morning depending
on the festive spirit.
The venue
The venue will be the Crown Plaza Hotel (The
Hague-Promenade) which is situated very centrally in The Hague; there are
good public transport facilities. You can find details of the hotel on its
website
www.crowneplazadenhaag.nl . The central location in town will make it
attractive for guests who plan to stay longer and to move around by public
transport. In the course of 2007 and early 2008 we plan to inform
participants about the transportation details as well as about events taking
place contemporaneously in and around the city.
Getting there
Arriving from abroad by plane one can choose to travel
by taxi (circa €70,00) or by train to Central Station The Hague and take a
taxi from there to the hotel.
Arriving by car from anywhere there is of course Tomtom
or just check the address and route on the website. The hotel has ample
parking space, but charges will be €9,50 for 24 hours.
Hotel accommodation and booking
We have negotiated the following arrangements with the
Crowne Plaza Hotel:
 |
We have secured a block booking for 75 rooms in
the hotel for a very reasonable price, being €125,00 per room per night
(single and double). Price includes buffet breakfast, but excludes city
tax (€4,76 per person per night). Prices may be subject to change in
2008. |
 |
This block booking will be reduced to 50% (38
rooms) if not yet booked as from 1st March 2008. |
 |
The reduced rate will only apply for the nights
of Friday 9th May and Saturday 10th of May. |
 |
Guests that intend to stay longer will have to
negotiate further reductions for other nights themselves. |
 |
Click
here to find a booking form for electronic reservations. Mark
the normal room rates. |
Optional
 |
We can arrange a joint breakfast in a separate
room on Sunday morning providing that there is sufficient interest. We
request you to indicate your preference on the application form that is
available at the foot of this section by clicking
here |
 |
We will assist to arrange excursions for those
guests that stay longer and may be interested to visit tourist
attractions. A visit to the
Keukenhof, that
should be in full bloom during May, is highly recommended. |
 |
We will provide information on other tourist
sights or events if you express your interest on the application form. |
Cost of the re-union
Your financial contribution for the event on Saturday
night will be the sum of €80,00 (eighty Euro) per person. For that money we
will offer you the following:
 |
A Dutch drink assortment for the meeting between
17.00 and 19.00 hours. Those drinks are limited to port, sherry,
white/rosé/red wine, jenever, beer, juices and soft drinks. Drinks
outside this arrangement will be for costs of the guests. |
 |
A quality buffet dinner with a wide variety of
dishes. For the hot part of the buffet we will require your choice of
meat or fish (chicken or salmon). The buffet arrangement is an excellent
way to change seating during courses and meet others; the table setting
will provide for this. The buffet will be served from 19.30 hours and
will be spread over some period thereafter. |
 |
Music will play from 19.00 hours and may be
background sound as well as accommodating those who want to dance. |
 |
Small expenses for instance for cloakroom service
and tips. |
Excluded are all drinks, such as wine, you may want
throughout the event from 19.00 hours. You should pay the waiters directly.
We will arrange personal drink order cards.
Your actions
1.
Fill out your application form to inform us of your intention to
participate. In particular indicate special wishes in the appropriate areas

Richard
Blennerhassett
Sadly, Richard died of a heart attack on 9th November 2007.
We remember him as a fine rig supervisor back in
those halcyon Warri days. He also played the piano, and on at
least one occasion the organ at a WV's wedding in Warri Cathedral in
1973.
In recent years, he positioned powerful motorbikes on
three continents, and every year would sail off by boat to go
two-wheel touring and looking for adventure.
He generously donated his body to science.
We will miss him in May 2008; this photo was taken at
the the last WVs Reunion, in 2005.
Rest in peace, Richard, our friend and colleague
