| Much as we loved the first reunion and really enjoyed meeting all our friends we will not be able to attend the second (not unless our
plans change drastically) Why? Because we will be on a major trip we have been planning and preparing for for nearly a year. Travelling with a small group of friends who all belong to the same travel club we will be taking a specially built motor caravan on a Ro-Ro ferry from Tilbury to Buenas Aires and spending 12 months touring South America, principally Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, Peru and Ecuador but maybe with quick looks at Uruguay, Paraguay and Brazil. We originally wanted to drive to China across Central Asia, but the worsening political climate has made that less and less attractive, so we settled on South America as a very good second best. The base vehicle, which we bought in Germany, is a low mileage second-hand, LHD Mercedes-Benz Vario 815D panel van and we have had it professionally converted to our own design. It has big load carrying capacity, big tyres, big suspension and big ground clearance so is suitable for rough roads. It is also very comfortably kitted out inside with a full size bed, good seats, diesel hob and oven, plenty of electrics including four solar panels and big batteries. We are planning to depart from Tilbury in late July and will start by driving up to the Iguazu falls and then back down through Patagonia to spend Christmas in Tierra del Fuego. In 2006 we will turn North on the Chile side Please accept our regrets about not being at the October event, we will certainly drink a toast to Warri and all our old friends on the night Please give our best wishes to everyone and let them know they can follow our travels (and see our van) on the club's website www.silkroute.org.uk already full of stunning photographs of the club's trips to China and Mongolia.
